Link Building: Time to Knock on Doors

On some Saturday mornings you may have experienced a particular religious group canvassing your neighborhood. They are doing what is called outreach. They're not waiting for you to come to them, they're bringing their message to you - knocking on your front door (yes, and ringing the doorbell ). They will explain the benefits of joining their organization or the message of salvation in Christ. They've created a value proposition by explaining why you should receive Christ as Savior or why you should be part of their organization. Their explaining how it is in your best interest to be part of what they are proposing. Sometimes it truly is to your benefit and sometimes it is not.

Link building by going after bloggers, directories and other websites is somewhat similar. You first want to locate the targeted"neighborhood". It could be a list of organizations online that provide a specific product of service. It could b a blog like this one that you would like to link. The first step is first to contact them to make your request and explain the benefit of linking to them and they to you. Some will be convinced, some skeptical and some will say no. For those they say yes, you'll celebrate and talk with the web person to set things up. But, make sure your benefits are of value to them and not just yourself. If they perceive that you wont link - and they may hang up the phone in your ear.
