Your website should accurately represent your brand and allow visitors to effectively navigate to the
information (product/service) that they searched for. If you sell square widgets and your research has shown that this term has a higher search volume then round or trapezoid widgets you want to make sure that square widgets are easy to find with relevant and current information. Many small business owners are more than willing to add all the bells and whistles to make their website aesthetically attractive but functionally challenging for their visitors. Some visitors to your website may become annoyed navigating your website. A good rule of thumb for selecting which bells and whistles to use, understand why visitors come to your website.
There are five bells and whistles that I don't recommend for any website. Keep it simple and you may find your conversion rates increasing.
Avoid the following:
- Elaborate flesh introductions
- Sound files that start up when a visitor arrives at your site
- Javascript functions that load mini windows on the page
- Java functions that load an additional application into the web page
- Pop-out menus that cover part of the screen with a new window
- Animated graphics or huge, fancy graphics
- Flashing banner adds that overpopulate the page
Reminder, allow visitors to easily locate what the're searching for along with an attractive site.
