Internet Usage: Its Growth and Economic Importance

In a recent Google Analytics report, 97% of consumers search online for local shops and services before leaving home to make a purchase in a retail store or purchase services. Consumers and businesses will search online for local shops and services to gather as much information before they pick up the phone. Consumer online behavior can no longer be ignored by business retailers regardless of the size of their business. Business services companies (B-to-B) can no longer take for granted their website and its regional position in search engines. Search Engine Optimization and Social Media Optimization can give you a competitive advantage if managed well with a specific strategic focus.

In June 2008, there were over 220 million Internet users in the United States according to Internet World Statistics, a source for Internet usage and population information. Nearly 73% of the American population.

In just a short period of time, Internet usage in the United States has steadily evolved from a mere curiosity for many, and an interest for only the tech savvy, to a mainstream form of communication and commerce for most Americans. Internet penetration has more than doubled in the past 10 years, reaching over 73% of the American population. The population is diverse:

Over half of Americans now have a high-speed Internet connection in their homes, compared to only 5% in 2000.
